RoutineLP/downloadBlackford Hill, released 18th July 2025
Purchase here via Bandcamp

Routine is a collection of thirteen previously unheard tracks recorded between 1996-97. These tracks are drawn from the daily working practice adopted by Ultramarine at their studio of the time on Coronet Street, behind London's Hoxton Square. Often the result of a single day's work, these pieces find the duo developing their palette, experimenting with sounds, treatments and techniques. Recorded as live mixes straight to tape, the results have the immediacy of new ideas freshly captured.

All tracks recorded direct to DAT at Survey, London, 1996-1997. Mastered from the original tapes by Jason Goz, Transition Mastering Studios, London, 2024.

Sleeve artwork by Guillaume de Ubéda.

Routine is available via Bandcamp and record stores worldwide (distributed by Kudos).

Ultramarine’s fifth album A User’s Guide was originally released on the New Electronica label in 1998.
Now reissued on the great Swiss imprint WRWTFWW. Remastered from the original DAT tapes by Jason Goz at Transition Mastering, pressed on black double-vinyl. Includes new sleeve notes by dance music historian Matt Anniss.

On the rare occasions that Ultramarine’s story is told, the duo’s fifth album, 1998’s A User’s Guide, tends to get omitted from the narrative. Radically different to anything the duo released before or since, it has remained a slept-on, timeless and inherently futurist classic ever since.

Ultramarine & Anna Domino meet again for a reworking of their collaborative track $10 Heel.

The song originally appeared on the Ultramarine album Signals Into Space (Les Disques du Crépuscule, 2019). $10 Rework replaces the urgent, jittery rhythm of the original with a straighter House backbone and then proceeds to disassemble the structure with a pair of freestyle, hands-on-the-desk, on-the-fly dub mixes.

Anna Domino's stream-of-consciousness lyrics tell the impressionistic tale of post-club after-hours chaos in Times Square, NYC circa 1979. Anna raps off studio equipment brand names like passing neon signs glimpsed in a blur through a taxi cab window.

Also guesting are saxophonist Iain Ballamy (ECM, Bill Bruford’s Earthworks, Loose Tubes) and percussionist & vibraphone player Ric Elsworth. The album was recorded & mixed in London with Andy Ramsay (Stereolab) and mastered by Noel Summerville.

Blackwaterside 7’’ single, booklet & downloadPublished by Random Spectacular, 2018Purchase here via Bandcamp
In August 2016 Ultramarine created a photo film and soundtrack entitled Blackwaterside featuring Ian Cooper’s photographs of a particular stretch of the Blackwater estuary in Essex. The film was screened on rotation at the Caught By The River Thames festival at Fulham Palace in London. As a continuation of the project, Ultramarine produced this audio/print package for Simon Lewin’s publishing imprint Random Spectacular, featuring two new pieces of music inspired by their time working close to the estuary.
Glasgow-based printmaker/sculptor Bronwen Sleigh visited this remote corner of Essex to sketch and draw, using these visual references to create a lithograph, printed in three colours, which features on the cover of the book accompanying the 7” single. The book features a series of Ian Cooper’s original photographs set alongside poetry by the writer Philip Terry, inspired by the Essex coast, taken from his book Quennets [Carcanet Press, 2016].
